Pottery and ceramics, textiles and carpets, jewellery and leather
goods: the wealth of Moroccan arts and crafts is rooted in a
living tradition. Making beautiful and practical objects, traditional
skills are handed down with passion down the generations.
Zellige mosaics, small earthenware tiles cut by a hammer,
remain very popular decorative features. The beauty of traditional
carpets from Rabat is also strongly appreciated, as is the
harmony of Berber rugs, traditionally cut djellabas and caftans.
The speciality of Fez , Rabat and Tétouan, very complex
embroidery decorates household linen and djellabas. The
souks of Fez and Marrakech are reputed for leather objects
such as poufs, babouches, bags and other leather goods. The
major pottery production centres are Fez and Safi . The jewellery
of Tiznit is also highly regarded. Whereas the town of Taroudant
is known for its silverwork, Marrakech, Fez and Tétouan
are reputed for brass and copper objects.
The major characteristic of these craft objects are that
they are made by hand, with traditional machines and tools.
This makes each object unique and perfectly authentic. They
can be found in all the souks throughout the country.
